This week has not started well for the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) community, as some members have been hacked.
There have been reports of some users losing their NFTs after a fake mint link was sent to their followers.
Compromise of BAYC Discord and Instagram
The BAYC Discord and Instagram accounts were hacked on Monday, and the hackers used a fake mint link to gain access to the followers’ wallets.
“There is no mint going on today. It looks like BAYC Instagram was hacked. Do not mint anything, click links, or link your wallet to anything,”Bored Ape YAcht Club Tweet
In the fraudulent mint link, hackers claimed that users could mint land in the company’s OthersideMeta, which is scheduled to launch this week.
These users fell prey to the attack after clicking on the mint link. Hackers have also accessed the wallets of these users and transferred funds to different wallets, including NFTs.
Zachxbt tweeted a picture of the hacker’s address drawn by the crypto sleuth.
Currently, an estimated 24 Bored Apes and 30 Mutant Apes have been stolen. According to their floor price, the stolen NFTs are worth approximately $13.7 million.
According to Zachxbt, 4 BAYCs, 7 MAYCs, 3 BAKCs, 1 CloneX, and other NFTs (91 NFTs) were stolen. We don’t have precise numbers, but it’s definitely more than what’s been dug out.
In a recent interview, BayC’s cofounder said that the team would contact the affected users. In addition, a post-mortem report will be released soon. The security practices were tight on Instagram and 2FA was enabled on the account, he noted. However, there is no information as to how the accounts were compromised on Instagram or Discord. The hack has been costly for the users who lost their valuable NFTs with one click.
